The Embassy of Belgium in Washington, D.C. is seeking a dynamic and experienced Head of Communications to lead its public diplomacy, its contacts with the press (Belgian and American), and its communications strategy. This position plays a key role in shaping our public image, fostering cultural and diplomatic engagement, and promoting our interests in the U.S. As the Head of Communications, you develop a network of contacts and coordinate with our headquarters in Belgium on positions or answers to press questions. You ensure consistent, high-quality communication across all platforms. You should be perfectly fluent in English, while knowledge of Dutch and/or French will be considered a plus. Excellent communication skills and networking skills are essential, and you should be able to work both independently and in team.

Salary range $6,570 – $9,526 gross/month (depending on recognized experience)
Starting date August 1, 2025

Job Description:
-Develop and implement a strategic communication plan
-Monitor media coverage, prepare regular analytical reports, and advise the Ambassador and senior leadership on the communication strategy and on rapid responses when needed
-Ensure message consistency across all embassy departments, activities, and social media channels
-Manage the Embassy’s digital presence (social media, website, newsletter)
-Maintain and develop a network of U.S. media contacts
-Coordinate press aspects of high-level visits
-Coordinate public diplomacy events and cultural partnerships
-Draft speeches, press releases, and official communications
-Serve as the primary press contact and maintaining media relations
-Coordinate crisis communication and rapid response planning.
-Manage relationships with vendors (designers, videographers, PR firms, etc.)
-Liaise with headquarters and attend coordination meetings
-Oversee branded materials, visual content, and multilingual communications
-Respond to public inquiries and support outreach initiatives
-Coordinate external sponsorship for events
Profile:
We are looking for a proactive and experienced communications professional with a strong background in public diplomacy, U.S. media relations, and digital communications. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker, a skilled communicator, and a team leader who thrives in a multicultural and diplomatic environment.
Candidates should:
-Show strong understanding of international affairs, political sensitivity, and the ability to quickly respond to fast-changing media environments
-Demonstrate knowledge of communication analytics and KPIs to assess performance, impact, and adapt the strategy accordingly
-Be comfortable representing the Embassy in public forums and other cooperation/coordination meetings
-Be familiar with the international media and political landscape and have a U.S. press network
-Have experience in international diplomacy or government communications
-Be autonomous, proactive, highly motivated and demonstrate sense of initiative
-Be a good team player and able to coordinate your work with other colleagues
-Have strong writing, editing, and public speaking skills
-Have experience with social media management, content creation, and digital tools
-Have a proven ability to manage events and coordinate with external partners
-Have leadership experience, including team supervision and project management
-Show a high level of discretion, reliability, and intercultural sensitivity
-Show creativity
The following additional skills will be considered as assets :
-Experience with working in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural environment
-Knowledge of Dutch and/or French
Required qualifications:
-Perfect written and spoken knowledge of English
-Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, international relations, or a related field
-5-7 years of relevant professional experience, with at least 3 years in communication
-Work eligibility: U.S. citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, or valid visa with work authorization
Conditions of Employment:
-Gross monthly salary range: $6,570 – $9,526 . This range is based solely on the recognition of relevant and verified employment experience
-A one-year contract, with the possibility of a permanent contract afterwards
-24 days of paid annual leave, in addition to fourteen official holidays
-A $150/month transportation allowance
